Next Artist Talk with Theresa Easton

As part of our Artist Talks this year we are pleased to announce that well known artist Theresa Easton will be giving the next blimey! Artist Talk on Wednesday 2nd July, 7.30pm upstairs in Darlington Central Working Mens Club, 7 Beaumont Street, Darlington, DL1 5RN.

Theresa Easton is printmaker and artist educator based in Newcastle using printmaking techniques to develop participatory projects that inform and cultivate her own studio practice.

Recent projects have used recycled books to create installations, drawing attention to local library closures or inviting members of the public to contribute to an ongoing collection of zines documenting the public’s response to current austerity measures. Theresa Easton is one of the founder members of Artists’ Union England, a trade union for visual and applied artists launched 2014 on International Workers Day.

Artist Talk next week with Nick Kennedy

Our next artist talk by artist Nick Kennedy, takes place on Wednesday 7th May at 7.30pm and is a special one-off event in collaboration with Art Lending Library, and will take place at Crown Street Gallery, Darlington.

Nick Kennedy is one of the artists whose work is available for ‘loan’ during the exhibition. Nick was born in Middlesbrough in 1983 and lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne. His work explores notions of chance, order, control and the role of the systems in our understanding and perception of the world. Nick uses various systems of mark making including autonomous drawing devices as part of large scale kinetic drawing installations.

Image above – Timecast (L.A.G. 5E) was produced during the large-scale kinetic drawing installation, Timecasting at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2013. 

Previous exhibitions include Globe Gallery and Laing Art Gallery – Newcastle, Centre for Recent Drawing – London and Drift Station/Parallax – Nebraska, USA. Upcoming exhibitions include Chance Finds Us mima, Middlesbrough and Art Lending LibraryCrown Street Gallery, Darlington.

Art Lending Library – Call for volunteers

Art Lending Library

Art Lending Library is an ambitious exhibition of more than 50 artworks that takes the form of an experimental library and public procession. Art Lending Library provides the unique opportunity for the people of the Borough of Darlington to borrow works of art and enjoy them within their homes, work places and community centres.

The exhibition will run from Saturday 3rd May until Thursday 5th June at Crown Street Gallery and Library. Members can borrow artworks for a five day loan period throughout the exhibition.

As part of the exhibition the Library are seeking people to sign up as volunteers and get involved. Roles will involve being volunteer librarians, art handlers (training to be provided) and parade volunteers. For info about how to get involved look here.

Part of the events around the exhibition will involve blimey!’s next artist talk being hosted at Crown Street Gallery on Wednesday 4th May. Further details to be posted nearer the time or sign up to our mailing list for news about all of our events.

Get involved at our next Work in Progress meeting

At our next meeting, artist and founder member of blimey! Carol Sommer is calling for artists or anyone interested in being involved, to come along and take part in contributing to one of her latest pieces –

I’m making a short film of women reading descriptions of Iris Murdoch’s fictional female characters and would like to invite as many women as are willing to take part, at the next blimey! meeting on Wednesday 2nd April from 7.30pm at Darlington Central Working Men’s Club, Beaumont Street, Darlington. Everyone very welcome and all contributions will be gratefully acknowledged.

First meeting of 2014

Following on from last year and deciding to hold our meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, our first meeting of 2014 will be on Wednesday 5th February at 7.30pm, upstairs in Darlington Central Working Mens Club.

This will be a ‘Work in Progress’ meeting so please come along and bring any ideas or art work that you’d like honest and friendly feedback on from the group.

We’ll also be planning our next series of artist talks and talking about further plans for the year.
