Last weeks demo outside the Council meeting to announce the closure of Darlington Arts Centre, blimey! lent their support to Darlington for Culture’s campaign to save the only dedicated visual arts space on offer in the town. The Council have and had already, decided to close the centre, no matter how much singing, music making and chanting the crowd produced to show their opposition.

Darlington for Culture organise a public demonstration against the closure of our Arts Centre. blimey! will be there for sure to support them and the arts in Darlington. Don’t let them get rid of our only dedicated arts space. See info from DfC below –
You will no doubt know that we are doing everything we can to try to save our Arts Centre and now we are asking for your support again, and in a very public way. On Wednesday February 22, at 6pm, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet meets at the Central Hall, Dolphin Centre, Darlington, to decide on the closure of the centre (the council has changed the time and venue from that earlier announced). Their budget papers already contain the recommendation for closure. We hope to make our views known before the meeting. The idea is to show the council that people care about the Arts Centre. The idea would be for people to gather in the Market Place at 5.30pm. Clearly, some people will wish to go into the meeting itself but we appreciate that some people may not do so but we hope they can join us at 5.30 for all that. We hope to make it a lively affair and musicians are asked to bring their instruments! We will invite the media. We are asking you to spread the word, tell you friends and the members of the organisations to which you belong, asking them to support this event. Please do support us in this show of support for the Arts Centre. We plan to repeat the demonstration of support ahead of the full council meeting on March 1 at the Town Hall. The meeting starts at 6pm and we will gather at 5.30, in the square at the front of the building.
